"The Last of the Rapper Sword Makers” Launch Event
"The Last of the Rapper Sword Makers” Sunday 15th November 2026, 3:00 PM
This exciting new project celebrates one of the region's most vital and vibrant living traditions: Rapper Sword making and dancing.
This heritage is rooted deep in the mining communities of the region. Traditionally known as the miners’ dance, Rapper Sword dancing is an exhilarating, high-energy art form combining physical agility, boundless energy, and the sharp wit so characteristic of the region.
Yet its reach today is truly global, with active dance teams performing across North America, Australasia, and beyond.
Every dancer relies on the flexible steel swords handcrafted here in the UK by the last remaining master Rapper Sword maker, Frank Lee, aged 80. This makes it a tradition standing at a critical turning point.
Our project is dedicated to safeguarding this endangered heritage. By celebrating Frank’s extraordinary contribution and carefully documenting his craft, we aim to build a viable, entrepreneurial model to train a new generation of craftspeople — creating real pathways to skilled employment and ensuring that the making of these iconic swords remains a living, sustainable regional trade.
The afternoon will include a live demonstration of Rapper Sword dancing, giving you a firsthand look at the speed, precision, and spirit of this remarkable craft.
