Gansey Gathering

Sharing skills. Sharing stories. Passing on tradition.

Born out of our successful Gansey exhibition, the Gansey Gathering is a new monthly get-together at Dry Water Arts celebrating the skills, stories and traditions surrounding these remarkable knitted garments.

Ganseys are part of our coastal heritage – practical working clothes made with extraordinary skill, with patterns, techniques and knowledge passed between families, knitters and communities over generations.

Our monthly gathering is a chance to keep that tradition moving.

Whether you are an experienced gansey knitter, have memories or stories connected to them, are interested in traditional patterns and techniques, or simply want to learn more, you are very welcome.

Bring along your knitting, a gansey you are working on, an old family piece, a pattern, a photograph, a story – or just yourself and your curiosity. There is no expectation that you already know how to knit a gansey.

This is not a formal class. It is a relaxed, sociable gathering where people can share skills, exchange knowledge, learn from one another and help pass a living tradition on to the next generation.

Over time, we hope the Gansey Gathering will become a place where local knowledge can be exchanged and recorded, new knitters can learn from experienced hands, and the stories held within these distinctive garments can continue to be told.

Come and knit, learn, talk and share – and help us keep our coastal gansey tradition alive.

All levels of experience welcome.
